The Alpine Highway

Sunday Jan 10: Reconnaisance ride 3—rained out. Plan was to ride south of Reefton on the Big River mine 4-wheeled drive track, then connect with wauita track. “gnarly single track likely to destroy numerous bike parts” is how the Kennett brothers describe the route. It’s pouring and windy, and I decide to have my bike parts destroyed next month.

We drive on the old alpine highway over Arthur’s pass through much wind and rain. While the vistas were lacking, the waterfalls were magnificent with all the rain. Lots of climbing to do after fixing those bike parts on the Big River track, I think. Great scenery right out of Hobbit and Frodo land.

We stopped to play hide and seek in a natural rock garden at Kura Tawhiti.   Found you, Eleanor. Found you, Claire. There's all the girls!  On to Springfield for the night. Dinner at great café --the Yellow Shack – and stayed at a very fine Hostel/motel: Smiley’s.
