Fri, Jan 8 Nelson:
Still too rough for paddling with kids today, so a day in Nelson. We went to the WOW Museum before lunch. If you’re ever in the area don’t miss it!
Truly a unique museum. Half devoted to ‘wearable art’, the other to collectable cars. Absolutely stunning art—dresses made from every imaginable material and color. The annual show for new submissions for the wearable art collection is in Sept in Wellington—30,000 folks watched the show last year. We’ll be there.
Then lunch at a Nelson restaurant: Mumbai Mexican. The girls had burritos, I had curry. The owner is Indian by heritage, but spent 10 years teaching cooking and running a Mexican restaurant in Minneapolis. Seems to work.
An hour or two at the Nelson beach—windy but fun. Laura got a run in while the girls swam.
Back in town, Laura climbed to the Center of New Zealand, where I’d ridden earlier in the day. It’s a city park with a short but steep and beautiful ascent to an amazing overlook that, at one point was thought to be the “center of New Zealand.” Here's me and the UPS colored Surly, set up for the big ride next month with sleeping bag/tarp on the back.
