Seals and Lagoons

Thurs, Jan 7 Nelson:

Slept in, and called the kayak folks, who said that the water was too rough for paddling with kids today. So, we piled into the car for an hour drive north to Abel Tasman national park for a water taxi/hiking adventure.

Took the taxi (speedboat, 16 seats) from Kaiteriteri to Tonga bay. The girls thought the rough sea was just like a roller coaster.

Went past Split Apple Rock, and saw seals, including a newborn, and a small blue penguin.

Hiked and picnic lunched down to Bark bay, where the boat picked us up and took us back to the start. We almost missed the boat (had to take the long walk around the lagoon because it was high tide)—just waved it down as it dropped anchor! A little beach play, then back to Nelson. Fish and chips for dinner.
