Sat Jan 30:
Sunny morning in Blenheim—we took a short walk in the hills south of town, all together, then Laura went up a hill for a great view, while the girls and I returned to town to search for food. We met for a picnic of Chinese takeaway, then to the museum to see exhibits about wineries in the region. Finally back to Picton to catch the 7pm ferry to Welllington.
Looked at an old ship, the Edwin Fox, which carried troops and convicts to Australia, and settlers to NZ in the 1800s.
Sunny departure and great sunset on the sound en route.
About 10pm, as we got close to Wellington, the wind picked up, and we sat in the car ready for departure at 10:30pm. Then the man in the yellow vest started to walk up and down the rows of cars, and we knew something was up. The wind was so strong that the ferry could not dock at Wellington! (Our ferry holds about 400 autos and trucks—not a trivial ship.) We pulled back out of the harbor, and a couple hours later were treated to the show of a huge tugboat pulling along side and hooking up with our ship. The tug backed us into the dock. I asked if this was a common occurance—“nope, never happened before.” A great welcome back to Windy Welly.
