Monday Feb 1: Laura is out at 8:30 for her first day of work in the Ministry buildings. The girls and I walk downtown for breakfast, and a first peek at one of the worlds best hands-on museums--Ta Papa. We met Laura in the afternoon at the girl’s new school, and both of them met their teachers. They are very excited. Claire’s 9th birthday will be on the first day of school. I meet my boss late in the afternoon for an intro chat—looks like I’ll be working about 30 hours a week, and will be able to get the girls from school at 3pm 2 or 3 days a week. Sounds very civilized.
The university Marae outside
and inside.
Tuesday Feb 2: Orientation day for me at Victoria University of Wellington. We visited 4 separate campuses in Wellington, then spent the late afternoon experiencing a Maori ceremony to welcome us into the local Marae. Very interesting and moving. After dinner, I put the bike back together and give it a wash, and new brake pads and chain.
Wednesday Feb 3: Wandering through the city with the girls in the morning. Picked up school supplies, laminated my maps for the Kiwi Brevet, picked up a few tidbits at the local bike shop. (spare spokes—hope I don’t ever see those during the ride. . .)
After dinner, a quick ride up a local hill to check out the new brake pads etc.
They take their mountain biking seriously here--publically maintained divided highway single track!
Civic minded men in Care Bear attire on parade.
I guess they do play rugby at home--here's the USA team with tropical attire.
Thurs Feb 4: Into town with the girls for more errands, and to watch the parade. The 'Sevens' are in town--Rugby teams from the world, for weekend matches and a 72 hour street party. Kicked off with a parade of floats and music today.
